Ear-deafening

Brody had turned toward the exit light when the sound hit. A sharp, whining screech echoed from deep inside the tunnel, bouncing off every wall. It was ear-deafening, shrill enough to make them wince and cover their ears. “That was absolutely not the wind,” Brody muttered, eyes wide. The sound felt like it came from something… alive. Every hair on his arms stood up. The mountain suddenly felt haunted.
