The man sheepishly stood up, rubbing the back of his neck. “Uh, I’m a private investigator,” he muttered, his voice barely audible. The room erupted into murmurs. He explained that he’d been hired by the adoptive parents to look into Lisa’s background. Gasps echoed across the courtroom. Lisa raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. It all seemed so ridiculous – why hire someone so obvious? And why pass notes like they were in a spy movie?
