Things got worse that night. They got into bed, listening to forest sounds. Jason fell asleep quickly, but Emily lay awake, sure she heard footsteps on the porch. Soft steps circled the cabin, then stopped. Maybe it was an animal. “City girl in the woods,” she whispered, trying to calm herself before falling asleep.
