Scanning for Activity

John leaned in slowly, expecting to see hornets crawling over its surface. He scanned every inch for movement, wings, anything. But there was nothing. No flurry of activity, no sign of life. The nest-like object just hung there, still and silent. That was almost more disturbing than if it were active. It looked like it had been there for a while—just waiting.
