Minutes felt like hours. The earthquake rumbled on for what seemed like forever. Charles gripped the frame tightly, bracing himself with each jolt. Finally, after nearly 20 minutes, the shaking slowed. The house settled with a loud creak, and silence returned. Charles exhaled deeply. The worst, he hoped, was over.
